Re: pumpkins DIGEST V1 #213

It was interesting. She kept saying that she didn't know what to expect in terms of our ability and our desires for the class, so I think she was a little unprepared, which is to be understood. She spent about an hour talking about the Ukraine and it's history. She said she has a good idea of what we want to learn and will have more for next week. Once we got to the language part, it was more enjoyable.

I think the rest of the course should go well. Thank you very much for setting this up.

pumpkin seeds Date: Tue, 23 Sep 2003 20:08:51 -0700 Sue, Growers on the
list do not sell their seeds because the Atlantic Giant patent to sell
them is owned by Howard Dill, the seed's originator. To purchase seeds
from Howard, go to www.howarddill.com The best time to buy seeds from him
is in a few months ..... after '03 harvest and weigh-offs are over. You
can also get some outstanding seeds from growers on this list by sending
them a self-addressed-stamped bubble pack with a request for some of
their seeds. You can find out how to contact many growers by going to
http://aggc.1wh.com/aggc_main.asp then click on "join". You will find
everything you ever want to know about Atlantic Giant genetics at this
site. You will also be able to pick up some great seeds at some of the
club auctions that you will see listed on this site this winter or by
joining some of the pumpkin clubs who will send you some nice seeds when
you sign up as a member. Also, keep in mind, the size of the pumpkin from
which you are getting your seeds from is not necessarily important. The
right cross (genetics) is a more important consideration. Some of the
hottest "in demand" seeds right now are from pumpkins in the 500 - 600
lb. range. Best of luck in '04 George Webster Napa, CA -----Original

Subject: Weighing Your Pumpkin

I have given great consideration to this problem of weighing a pumpkin before
it goes down and since I hope next year (not this year) to break the world
record, I have a plan. The problem with weighing your pumpin just before it goes
down means that you just might sacrifice a few pounds by jumping the gun.
With this in mind I plan to grow each of my pumpkins on digital scales. That way
I can weigh them every night and morning and submit the weight I got just
before the hole occurred. I think the scales will cost around $1000 each and this
might prove to be acceptable should I grow the new world record. Anyone want
to buy some scales with me as I think we can get a better deal buying in bulk.
Any comments? Also the metal scales will keep the pumpkins off the ground and
prevent such things as bottom rot and holes from mice through the bottom etc
etc. 10 days to weighoff for the GPC. Good luck to all. Now is not the time for
a big pumpkin to go down.

Hi list,
Has anyone talked with Don Langevin via email recently? I sent him several emails over the last two to three weeks but never received a response. Is his email address (Annedawn@aol.com) still correct or does he have a new one?
Usually he is answering emails very quickly....
Thanks,

Hi, George!
I posted a question about the same time as Sue C. Maybe you could help
me like you helped her. It IS a serious question, and no one has
answered yet.
David's shallow-ribbed pumpkin has developed hairline cracks along its
ribs. Yesterday I discovered that mine has also, although IF my little
fatso has ribs, they're covered by so much baby fat that they are not
apparent.
1. Are these aught to be concerned about?
2. If so, what should we do?
3. In either case, what causes them?
Thanks!
Kathie

Subject: A California Patch Update - Baby Beluga Comes Up for Air

Rumors abound of monstrous pumpkins lurking in various patches
around the planet. No rumors here... nothing's happening, no
way... not this year...

There have been some sightings, however, in the Yin and Yang
patch. Something large breaks the surface and then disappears
leaving only a ripple in the green waves. The locals are
talking and cars drive slowly by hoping to catch a glimpse...

I was wondering myself what all the commotion was about when
one day I saw Baby Beluga (1230 Daletas) come up for air. Then
I knew. She is getting.... well, rather large.... But this is
no monster - nothing to fear, just a small white whale.

She's still adding layers of blubber though and should pull her
own weight when she surfaces at Half Moon Bay. She's a bit too
slippery to get a tape around so we won't be talkin' any
numbers.... heh heh.

I've put some pictures of recent sightings at the following
link:

http://home.pacbell.net/diana_do/beluga.htm

My other plant (831 Zunino) intends to set a record this year.
I've grown 17 pumpkins on this 800 square foot plant. Most are
between 200 and 300 pounds. All are pretty, very orange, nice
ribbing with long yellow handles. Total estimated weight is
2,411 pounds for the first 13 with 4 still growing.

More on this later when the numbers are all in...

Best of luck at the weigh offs for all.

vince

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I get those all the time. I think its like the skin is buckling . It
possibly indicates an inner stress crack. They should be fine if the
pumpkin is growing slowly.

Watch them and if they look like they are starting to open this nervous
Nelly knotches the vine to slow the growth but I am a whimp no guts no
glory.....you always have that option though--Mb

Hi Don,

I sent you an email because I find this format awkward.
But I'll give this a shot anyway.
I live in CT. If you can make it to Durham tonight you can
meet a lot of the CT growers.
No matter the seeds you started, you ended up growing
Squash. Atlantic Giant Pumpkins aren't green.
Check your emails today for my cell phone. Durham
weigh-in starts at 3PM. Most growers show up at or
after 5PM. Weigh-in ends at 9PM. Lot's of fun!

Hope you can make it tonight. CT growers are very
much willing to assist. This is the best day of the
year for "networking" together.

Thanks Kathy, yes the PGVG is offering scales. In line digital scales. If
you would like more information please contact either myself or Jack LaRue.
Cost is $399.00 + shipping. Unfortuneately they won't be ready before October
4th, but they would make a great Christmas gift.

Thanks,
