Getting the patch ready for next year.

I'm digging a new patch. I've got nasty hard clay, and I plan to dig it
up and put in a mixture of manure, compost, and black topsoil, with a
little bit of sand as well. I've got my cover crop picked out and ready
to plant. Does anyone have any good recipes for planting medium with
these ingredients that they are willing to share. I've read that
pumpkins are shallow rooted. How deep do I need to go in removing the
clay? Is there such a thing as too much manure when growing AG's?

Many Thanks!
