Patch Update - The Lucky Touch of Green

There's some touches of green in my patch - I think it portends
luck of a good sort.

I found a spot of green on Lilu, my 1048 Companion, the other
day. When I reached down to touch it - it hopped away! Turned
out it was a small green frog. I named him Lucky. He's hanging
around the stem feasting on the cucumber beetles and doing a
fine job of keeping them off the pumpkin. I've had to powder
my other pumpkins with Sevin to keep the beetles from eating
grooves into them. But I've kept Lilu clean of insecticides and
Lucky has kept her spotless.

Lilu grew fast and furious but I slowed her down early to save
her sorry ass from splitting... Lilu lost her looks when she
formed a sag line, and then I saw a potential split coming at a
deep crevice between a rib and the sag line. I let another
pumpkin set on a back vine to draw down the plant and and slow
down her growth. When this pumpkin, (Bubbles) started going 20
pounds a day, sure enough - Lilu slowed down to a crawl.

I know I stunted Lilu, but she's holding together just fine.
She's taping out now near 950 lbs. and still going. Check out
her web cam at:

Bubbles by the way is simply gorgeous. 26 feet out from the
stump on a tertiary, she's already packin' about 500 pounds,
has a beautiful shape and is still going 12-15 lbs. a day.

There are a few pumpkins that are pretty, and then there are a
very few that are absolutely breath taking. Little David
(1,230 Daletas) is downright mesmerizing and leaves one
gasping. He is now taping heavier than Lilu and looks to weigh
heavy to boot. To see a shot of Little David, have an oxygen
mask handy and click on this link:

Finally, there's Clifford, and another green story. Clifford
is growing on a back tertiary of the 1230 Daletas that I
separated from the plant so he didn't pull too much juice from
Little David. He's been sulking in his corner of the patch,
growing slowly covered by some old teeshirts and other rags...
I removed the coverings the other day to find a squarish patch
of green on his belly. This was apparently caused by a
reaction with the fabric covering.

Where he was covered by the cotton tee shirts he still is a
light cream color. Where he was exposed to the sun he has
turned orange. But contact with some unknown fabric caused a
green color to emerge. He kind of looks like a quilt now with
random cream, orange and green patches.

Clifford is taping out at 350 pounds now and still growing at 5
pounds a day - hot in pursuit of the stumpless wonder
record....

Best of luck to all at the weigh-offs....

vince
