RE: dying leaves

Deb,
My leaves are all but toast from powdery mildew etc.. It has been real bad
this year all over the Midwest. My field pumpkins are even succumbing to it
and the varieties I use are extremely resistant. I have thrown every
fungicide I have at it and it is winning. The good thing for me, is the
Indiana weigh-off is in two weeks. I am going to take my AG's off the stem
as soon as the last leaf dies and photosynthesis stops. That way I can cure
the stems and fruit for the trip and some GREAT jack-o-lanterns. I realize
at that point, they stop growing and start losing weight. I am not going to
win anything with the fruits I have left anyway. They are the best looking
pumpkins in Indiana though, and we had a great time growing them!
I would try your best to keep the tops dry and hope for the best. If you do
spray anything, do it at dawn so they have the day to dry. I admire your
commitment and effort you are showing in all of this.
Best of Luck!

Steve Haberman

I do have powdery mildew, but the other white spots are bright white. They
appeared closest to the stump then moved down the vine. My guess is that it
is
because they are older leaves. I am using Eagle 20 and milk for the PM.
Not
sure if it is working too well. I now only have leaves on one side of
the
plant. I wasn't able to let the vines on the one side grow very long.
It looks
like a flag. I don't know if there is much else I can do to save
the leaves.
Quite a few of the leaves also have brown/rust spots. The
leaves are very
brittle and dry. I hit the plant with ferts and Eagle 20 and
disease control.

Please tell me that the pumpkin will continue to grow with a
strong main
vine... if not, then break it to me gently.

Debbie

Sounds like powdery mildew to me. It spreads fast so
you'd better spray for it
asap or it will kill all the leaves.
