exploding pumpkin?

Everything was fine this morning when I put a white towel over my last decent 
pumpkin (almost all others have died).  This pumpkin is about the size of a 
basket ball and too small to use OTT for an estimated weight.  I went out to 
remove the towels and the pumpkin had split in several places.  I did not see 
any evidence of foul play so the only conclusion I can come to is it exploded or 
burst.  Any thoughts?
