pumpkin lore

I had the unique experience of introducing pumpkin carving to a decidedly
non-western culture ... I was on a trek in the Bhutanese Himalayas and
discovered they grow pumpkin-like gourds.  I carved up an image of a
Bhutanese deity (with flaming eyes) and presented it to the guide and
staff.

My reward was a big, "Huh?".  Their basic comment was, "we eat these, here".
