Well the lumpy duo of Hans and Fanz has been split up. Franz will
languish in my pea patch plot until a later weigh off while Hans takes in
the hustle and bustle of the Puyallup fair and develops an inferiority
complex. Hans at 180" OTT looks like a bonsai version of an AG compared to
the entries of Joel Holland, Geneva Emmons and several other Puyallup area
growers whose names I cannot remember. Joel's entry at the fair last year
was 807 lbs. and the one he brought this year looks every bit as big. They
hadn't weighed any by the time I finished up there but I'll be back there on
Sunday and try to get some weights and names. The fair offers a $200 award
to the largest pumpkin/squash. It looks like Mr. Holland will be cashing
that check. Man these things are impressive when they get big like that. I
may have found a way for Hans to wear a ribbon though. The agronomy folks
suggested that I enter it as squash for the largest winter squash class.
Since technically they are squash. (Fat soft stem. Not green prickly and
5 lobed they told me.) Since the other entries appeared to be in the other
class I followed their advice. We'll see what happens. It looks like I
have a good chance at a ribbon for my spaghetti squash though since I saw
only one other entry and they offer a first, second, and third award. I'll
post again
on Monday when I have new info.
Good growing,
Chris Michalec
