Lisa,
Depending on the progress of the rot you may be able to save her by
scraping out the rot with a spoon or knife and apply a paste of Captan.
Sometimes this works sometimes it does not!
I was told by our local nursery you can't buy Captan in Calif. anymore but
I found a large supply of it at Home Depo, they indicated they had no
problem getting it and it was still legal in Calif.
On a second note I tried an experiment this year with stems & Captan.
On several of my pumpkins I applied a paste of captan to the stem at a very
early stage of growth, middle of August, about the time the stem begins to
swell and develop stress cracks.
There was no reason to apply any captan but I did so for precaution.
On several other pumpkins I did not apply any captan to the stems early on.
Those pumpkins which I applied the captan to early on are all very healthy
and in good shape so far, those which I did not apply captan too are all
off the vine due to stem rot.
