Help, all pumpkin growers! I'm so totally steamed I can hardly even spit! I
entered my coddled-along baby Atlantic Giant (109 lbs) in the Fall Fair
today (in the Field crops section). The only other pumpkin was a jack o'
lantern size (39.25 lbs), so I knew I was a shoo-in for first. BUT! The
stupid Agriculture B.C judge said that because the stem was not a normal
"five-pointed star" dark green pumpkin stem, that it must be actually a
squash. So he demoted it to the squash class where it lost to a 169 lb.
Showmaster squash!
I was so ticked, I printed off the pumpkin pages with their pictures
including the Greer 1006 from last year but the stems were difficult to
see, and by then the judge had left on the next ferry to Victoria (lucky
for him, since I was ready to commit judgicide...).
Can anyone, ANYONE out there please send me pictures (GIF or JPG) of
Atlantic Giant pumpkins with a clear close-up of the stems, and some
description of the way the stems of an AGP looks, so I can enlighten this
idiot!!???
I got his card from the co-ordinator and plan to send him weekly faxes with
sworn depositions from AGP growers. Howard Dill, farmer Gus, Duncan
McAlpine, Bill Verchere, can you help? Anyone else who has a scanner or a
fax?
My FAX number is 250-537-0014. The judge who doesn't know a squash from an
Atlantic Giant pumpkin is Michael Betts, Filed Crops and turf specialist,
Province of British Columbia Ministry of Agriculture, phone 250-656-0041,
FAX 250-656-8922.
I need your help to prevent an even greater wrong: the section
co-ordiantor wants to solve the problem by "putting a note in next year's
fair application forms that all pumpkins must have the five-pointed star
stem" thus effectively eliminating ALL Atlantic Giant Pumpkins from the
competition for as long as Mr. Betts is judging it!!!!! If I can't prove
to both of them that the AGP HAS that big, juicy-looking "squash-like"
stem, then there is no hope for pumpkin-growing! Any newsletter photos you
can send (heck FAX them right to Michael Betts with a note about your
outrage that such an ostensibly well-qualifed judge could be so sadly
misinformed) would be greatly appreciated.
In the name of pumpkin-growers everwhere, I beseech you all for aid!
M'aidez!
