Win Some, Lose Some

This last weekend the first frost was supposed to hit southern Minnesota.
In the process of covering up all the pumpkins in the patch, I discovered a
side rib split on my 450 pounder. It was a very narrow split, but in the
process of applying Captan, I discovered that the split went clear to the
center. :( Also lost a 350 pound pumpkin in mid-August due to blossom
end split.

The good news is that the frost just touched a few leave in the patch and
that all the plants are still healthy. The forecast for the next week is
very positive, so I hope the pumpkins I have left will gain several more
pounds.

One of my plants did not set any pumpkins until late in the season -- too
late to grow a large one. Anyway, I let eight of them survive and they
range in weight from 123 to 241 pounds -- total weight on plant is
approximately 1400 pounds.
