pH Level

This is a reminder to all of you large pumpkin growers to determine the pH
level of your soil. I had always assumed that the area in which I grow my
pumpkins had the proper pH level as I have always grown excellent
vegetables. How wrong I was! I had the soil tested late this growing
season and it was 7.6. Optimum pH level for growing large pumpkins is
6.5-6.8. I have a very low potassium level which is the essential
ingredient for fruit growth. This fall I will start to correct the
situation.

I am not complaining as this is the best year for me in growing large
pumpkins as I have 27 over 100 pounds of which 5 are over 400 pounds. I am
sure that if I had the correct level of potassium in the soil, my numbers
would be that much better.
