Rookie Grower, WNY

Thanks to all in advance,
I am a rookie grower from Niagara Falls, NY.  I have, as of yet (4 years) had
any monstrous pumpkins to speak of.  If anyone from around this area knows
secrets to growing in the N.E., please advise.  I usually sow the seeds on
Memorial Day weekend, good or bad?? Thanks again Paul
