I need help with little cracks.
One of my pumpkins is developing small hairline cracks overnight which are
oozing a clear slightly sticky liquid. The pumpkin is growing slow but
steady (26 pounds in 4 days). For Sept., the overnight lows are 52.7 to
57.6 with daytime highs from 80.7 to 84.3 degrees F. Very low humidity.
Last rain was 2.55" on 26 Aug. and 0.05" on 2 Sept., so I water moderately
every day. The pumpkin is covered with a blanket (orange in color of
course) at night uncovered but shaded during the day. Today (7:30 am) the
surface temperature of the pumpkin was 76 while the air temp was 65. Each
day when I get home(4:30-5:00pm), I remove the shade cover and expose the
west end (blossom) to direct sunlight in hopes that it will warm up a
little for the night. I think that covers all of its growing conditions.
These little cracks seem to be all on the blossom end that has been
'warmed'. Are they relieving stress or are they a sign of impending doom
(ie a bigger crack)? Now for the heavy hitters, what is the explanation
and what should I do besides not looking so close at my pumpkin?
