Dear fellow pumpkin enthusiasts on the west coast of British Columbia the
Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island. Salt Spring Island is having its first
annual great pumpkin contest this, with big cash prizes! Well, pretty big
for around here -- $300 first place, Smaller amounts for the second two
spots (I don't remember the exact amounts...) It will take place on the
grounds and during the Farmer's Institute Fall Fair on the weekend of Sep.
19th and 20th. All who wish to may enter, but you must pre-register one
week ahead. Hope to see you there!

Salt Spring Island Pumpkin Contest
Rules & Regulations
1. The pumpkin must have been grown and cared for by the exhibitor.
2. There may be no more than two entries per family or household.
3. To enter, growers must pre-register before 5 p.m. Friday, September 11
by
telephone, 250-537-9933, or by fax, 250-537-2613.
4. Entries will be accepted at the Islands Farmers Institute grounds,
Rainbow Road, Salt Spring Island, between 3 and 4 p.m. Friday, September
18.
5. The official weigh-in will take place during the Salt Spring Island Fall
Fair at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 19.
6. To be eligible, entries must be a minimum of 75% white to cream-yellow
to
orange in colour. All others will be considered squash.
7. Specimens must be sound, healthy and undamaged. They must be free of
rot,
holes/cracks through to the cavity, chemical residues and serious soft
spots.
8. No foreign material is permitted to be included in the weighing. The
vine
must be trimmed to one inch from the stem of the fruit.
9. The judges reserve the right to fully inspect each specimen before the
weight is announced and made official. Refusal to allow the inspection of
an
entry will result in the entry being deemed for exhibition only.
10. In the event of a tie, the specimens will be declared co-winners.
Weights will be recorded in half-pound increments (rounded down to the
nearest half-pound).
11. Entries must remain with the pumpkin display on the Islands Farmers
Institute grounds until 5 p.m. Sunday, September 20.
12. Decisions of the judges will be final.
