I took my pumpkin to the fair, oh boy!

	To: All

I just brought my pumpkin back from the Mount Forrest Fair. I won first
prize with a 394lb'er. Not very big but I have excuses:). Mainly I did not
water the plants for over a month in the middle of the summer because my
well (pump tank and motor control) were broken. And it was a first year
garden, I just moved into this house in Oct 97.
This is very interesting because one of my other plants, the Anderson 815,
has a pumpkin on it that is between 250 and 300 lbs. I did not do a thing
to this plant but put it in the ground. This is a result of having to
concentrate my resources onto one plant, the Anderson 977. I did not
fertilize the soil or the plant and it was not sprayed with anything. I am
looking at this plant as a control specimen to gauge future results
from.... If any of you can think of any info you would like from this plant
please let me know. I know this is a rare opportunity for all of us since
none of us have the kind of will power it takes to not even water them or
anything.....:)
Anyways, back to the fair. I bring the pumpkin in and it immediately
gathered a crowd of about 20 people. Taking pictures etc etc. I look over
and all the other pumpkins put together would not equal the weight of mine.
The onlookers did not understand my look of disappointment when the weight
did not even break 400lbs. It was kind of funny though that I felt like a
mean old bastard when I realized that most of the pumpkins in the contest
belonged to KIDS. Oh, I felt so bad.
The guys that helped me bring it to the fair all started to laugh and bug
me. Tony says "Don't you feel bad taking 30 bucks from a kid". They pointed
over to a mother of one of the other constants and we saw her consoling her
son who had the second biggest pumpkin next to mine. He was so
disappointed, it was about 10 minutes to the entry deadline and he thought
he had clinched 1st place. Then it happened! The car with the big trailer
pulls into the back of the arena with what I am sure he thought was a big
paper mache pumpkin on it. To make a long story longer, I felt so awful
that I went home, bagged up about 100 of my better seeds and hurried back
to the fair. I gave the seeds to organizer and he distributed them to the
kids. That made me feel a bit better. All in all it was pretty funny and I
enjoyed the competition.

Troy,

P.S. I think the pumpkin enjoyed it's last couple of days out of his tent.
