The prime reason I have gotten mixed up in the pumpkin lark is that when
my children were 5 and 6 they entered a pumpkin comp organised by the
local Council. Douglas was the smallest competitor and grew the biggest
pumpkin. It was bigger than he was. He came first, older son Tim came
second and Douglas entered his plan 'B' which came third.
They got such a buzz that I said "if ever I was in the position to do
this then I would" - here I am.
They really did grow them albeit under my guidance - the point is that
cheats really never do prosper and we will always get the yobo's
cheating. At least they are there at the comp' and not in front of a
play station. Our 'profit' from this is kids getting a life skill and a
family working on a project together.
Doesn't help your problem Tony but is my 10 cents worth anyway.

PF,
It may be that the Marshfield people just don't want to have
a kids contest
or be bothered with it. You will always get a few jerky parents
that grow the
pumpkin and say their kids did it. There is not too much you can
do about
dishonest parents. It may be , that this is not for Marshfield.
At the Big E
childrens contest, they interview the children to ask them how
they grew
it....to discourage the cheating parents. We haven't had much of
a problem at
New Milford. The 50th place prize at Topsfield is just a
proposal for next
year....but I think it will fly.

VB,
Good call on the childrens pumpkin contest. I was at the big
E contest last
year and a father brought in multiple entries. One of his kids
came up to him
and said, "Dad which pumpkin is mine"?

So how do you stop a guy from growing pumpkins for his
relatives?
For many years now this guy has won and a family member comes
second and third most of the time. He comes from a better
pumpkin
growing state, and takes our prizes every year.
He has pretty well ruined our competition.
I wouldn't mind so much if they played the game honestly!

we had the opposite kind of thing happen at "our" contest at
the

offered $$100

adults weighed
111 and the junior 321.....something just didn't seem

I have never had one like this, does anyone have experience with
this type?
How do they run compared to the OTT method? I had a Blossom End
Down in 93
that ran heaver than the OTT chart but did not have as big of
ribs as this
one. This looks like a big Tractor Tire that fell over, it has
12 Ribs up to
18" wide. Looks like my 617 that is in Don's book but on it's
back.

Tony here in the states most our contests allow 2 pumpkins per
family and
usually a pumpkin widow takes in the back up......but it is
generally
accepted as the "tag team" share the chores around the
place....and the
patch,,,,it all depends on the size of the weigh -off,,,YOU CAN
BEAT THIS
GUY!,,,,have you mulched your patch??.This seem to cool the soil
....seems
that you have had some good seed down under have you ever
planted your own
seed from these good crosses........??? sometimes that
helps.....talk to us
we can psyche out this dude and challenge........brock

Tony:
Why not limit your contest to individuals residing in your state
or growing in
your state. That would totally eliminate him. Or charge a large
fee for out-
of-staters. Or tell him he had to preregister. Or just tell him
to g-t-h.

I've often wondered about what happens when cir. measurements
stop after
lets say 60 days. Now you said the inside thickens and the seeds
mature.
I'll agree the seeds will mature better when the pumpkin stays
on the
vine longer but what or how do you base your statement that the
inside
thickens? anyone have an opinion on what happens those 2 to 3
long weeks
of waiting till show time!!!does everyone continue to water?
fertilize?

For many years my company sponsored an outdoor Christmas
lighting contest.
We had a similar problem with certain deep pocketed (install a
new
electrically panel just to be able to put out more lights!),
creative people
being the 1,2,3 winners each year. We solved the problem by
creating an
category we called the "Masters Division". Anyone who finished
in the first,
second and/or third positions in the last five years had to
compete only
against other master winners. Prizes for master winners and new
winners were
awarded. Our entries increased dramatically once the new
division was
created as rookies no longer had to compete head-to-head with
the "heavy
hitters" and thus felt they had a shot at being a winner. The
concept should
work at a weigh-off
as well.

Subject: Scar seeds
Hi everyone,
Well I am not dead from pumpkin crack depression and the seeds
from Scar are
dry. Everyone who was interested in seeds from this early
season moose feel
free to send me a bubble envelope with your address on it and I
will stuff a
few seeds from Scar in it. My address is:
Brett Hester
8879 S. Good Lane
Canby, Oregon 97013
There were roughly 350 good viable seeds in Scar Who Weighed in
at #608 pounds
in 43 days. As a foot note however, Wart weighed in at #662
pounds after only
39 days. If I can keep one from cracking, I may get a big one
someday. Wart
is still hanging around in great shape after being off the vine
for about 3
weeks now. Only six pumpkins remain in the patch now over 400
pounds, so
needless to say I am looking forward to 1999.
Good Luck,
Brett The Pumpkinguru Hester
