Application for AG Seeds. Please Print and Save if it's too early.
I am looking for some seeds from some genetically superior AG's.
Please read this and if it's overkill let me
know too.
This is my first year (1999) to grow the AG. I am an avid gardener
and my chidden wanted to grow some big ones having seen some pictures
in my seed catalogs. I purchased the book, "Growing World Class
Pumpkins", checked out all the web sites and have been on the
mailing
list for a couple of months. I have a partner "family" to share
the work
and allow for summer vacations to be scheduled. We are planning
to
break the Utah record of 612.5; but will be happy this year to harvest
some big ones and enjoy the fun of these big plants!
I have 4000 sq feet that I recentley covered with 5 yards of steer
manure
to build the organic matter and add nutrients; then tilled it
twice.
On SEP 9th I planted the area in winter barley and will sow hairy
vetch
for a green manure to be tilled under in the spring. When I sow
the seeds
outside, I'll be using the 8x8 foot square "hole" mounded on four sides
(sides covered with black plastic) a heating cable underneath with
glass
over the top. I have enough glazing and brick to go up high,
then to form
a wind and weather barrier until the plants are free of cold weather.
I am
putting in a fence around the area and will attach 1/8 plywood as a
wind break
as needed. I removed two trees for unobstructed sunshine.
I tested the soil
recently, and I have good P & K, but need N and need to lower the
Ph a bit.
I plan on fine tuning the PH in the spring and making the necessary
adjustments.
The barley should lower the Ph. Does all this really matter?
I plan to plant 2 mounds with 4 different seed types. I
will manually pollinate
and want to cross some good AG genes and will return seeds as desired,
if I
get a big one. If anyone has a genitic combination they want
me to try, I am
willing to do the work! I intend on limiting the foliage to about
1000 sg feet.
Utah has a long, hot growing season (advice) but my squash and
melons do well each
year in this area. I have a love for gardening, adequate
time and other resources
and my kids (5) are great weeders and bug pullers.
Advice is welcome. I have some basic knowledge but anxious about
the practical
aspects of this adventure. If you have seeds that
you would like to see used in
the manner I have described, I would take the stewardship of them seriously.
I don't want too many, so if you would email me or call, I would Like
to discuss
what you have so I don't get more than I can use. I am particularly
interested in
those seeds that have a genetic history¯so I can track what I
get, with what has
been grown, and pass them along intelligently.
Thank you for considering this "application" for AG seeds.
Sincerely,
Michael Peterson
