Hi, Duncan,
I don't know if you caught my post of a few weeks ago, but we are having a
weigh-off this year as part of the Salt Spring Island Fall Fair. We're an
unofficial weigh-off site but if gets better attended in the years to come
we will join the GPC, and meanwhile have their blessing and co-operation.
We are expecting your uncle Bill Verchere, myself with a baby, but the only
one that didn't self-destruct, a puny 220 inches OTT, making that 225
pounds, whic doubles the weight of my first effort last year. This was on a
new garden plot that didn't get a chance to do much more than be plowed,
have a load of chicken manure dumped on it, some greensand and phosphate
rock and dolomite lime, some kelp and seashells, and hope for the best.
I'll be planting a green manure cover crop this fall after the fair --
vetch, maybe, or winter rye, don't know which is best for soggy, clay soil.
And NEXT YEAR I'll grow the big one! This year's big one came on the plant
I had ignored all season, the Anderson 634. I put all my energies into the
Anders 977 and 815, and both of them succumbed - the first to some weird
leaf/stem/plant wilt that killed it from the centre outwards, the second to
pumpkin rot from the bottom up. The 634 just kept truckin'along, slow but
steady. At least I HAVE a fruit to display this year, unlike some! Craig
Sandvik of Vancouver Island was the guy who had us all shaking in our
boots, with a 500-pound monster, but it went three days ago to a split.
Sad. He may bring it anyway, and I hope he does, for display only. Anyway,
here's my original post about the 1st Annual Salt Spring Island Great
Pumpkin Contest:
>>>>
Dear fellow pumpkin enthusiasts on the west coast of British Columbia the
Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island. Salt Spring Island is having its first
annual great pumpkin contest this, with big cash prizes! Well, pretty big
for around here -- $300 first place, Smaller amounts for the second two
spots (I don't remember the exact amounts...) It will take place on the
grounds and during the Farmer's Institute Fall Fair on the weekend of Sep.
19th and 20th. All who wish to may enter, but you must pre-register one
week ahead. Hope to see you there!
