Another PA update
I too have been having not so good luck here in PA. My best pumpkin
went down yesterday at 265 OTT. Hadn't gained in about 4+ days, that's
when I noticed the split near the ground. It was on an 815 Checkon
plant, looked very similiar to the picture of Larry's(but much,MUCH
smaller). I think it would have been entered as a squash due to being
about 20- 25% green. Up until it went down it was becoming greener as
the days went by.
Related to the info from Barb regarding the mosaic virus. I undestand
where she is coming from. Had an 780 Eaton plant come down with it
early in the season (mid July). The vine was already small due to my
intention of just running a single main and leaving the plant at 500sq
foot max. Once the virus showed up I thought it was over for this
plant, planned on removing it. Spoke with a few people and finally
decided to leave the plant in and trim away the affected vines and see
how it would do. All new growth showed signs of disease but none of the
existing seemed affected. After trimming the disease away you could
easily fit the plant in a 10' x 15' room. I counted about 150 leaves
left on the plant. Not a single leaf that remains has become infected.
The plant has a single fruit set 7/8 at 12 ft, near the terminated end
of the vine. It by no means is a giant (only 218 OTT) but it is the ONLY
fruit I have that is still growing. Not much to show for '99 but this
plant has done remarkably will considering. The leaves are all showing
signs of old age but otherwise healthy.
