RE: Puyallup Fair weighoff - Top 3 and all the rest.

OK, here's the rundown I promised on the Puyallup fair weigh-off. It was a
fun event a few heavy hitters and a newbie and wannabes and a pretty decent
crowd of spectators. Not as many pumpkins as we had hoped for perhaps, but
it has been a tough year for many northwest growers. We are right now in
the midst of our longest period of sustained warm weather of the summer.
Predicted highs in the upper 80's today in western Washington and we've seen
very little of that this year.
Heres the rundown with the genetic information I was able to get.
1. Geneva Emmons 646 lbs. 930 Emmons 98 uow X 1056 Stellpflug 98
2. Joel Holland 540 lbs. 854 Holland 98 X 879 Holland 97
3. Brett Hester 517.5 lbs. 469 Hester 97 X 866 Mombert 96
4. Stan Pugh 430 lbs. (1st year grower) 865 Mettler 98 X 685 Mettler 98
5. Chris Michalec 340 lbs. 916 LaRue 97 X 769 Mettler 98
6. Sherry LaRue 311 lbs.
7. Jack LaRue 293 lbs. ( I was unable to get the info from the LaRues due
to thier involvement in helping to run the weigh-off and my daughters
overactive bladder requiring multiple visits to the restrooms.)
Brett Hester weighed a nice green squash at 474.5 lbs. it came from a 738
Stellpflug with multiple pollinators.
Lincoln Mettler weighed two pumpkins for demo that had blossom end splits.
1. 585 lbs. 974 Mettler 98 X 935 Lloyd 97
2. 588 lbs. 974 Mettler 98 X 560 LaRue 95
I weighed another one for grins that I had cracked the stem on earlier in
the season.
270 lbs. 759 Mombert 97 X 769 Mettler 98 This could have been a nice one if
I hadn't
damaged it when it was about 60" in circumference.
Geneva's winner was a wagon wheel shape and weighed heavy for its size she
told me.
It was nice to have a taste of what's to come in October. If the warm
weather holds up
we may still be able to put some size on the pumpkins we have left in our
patches. Next
years fair weigh off should be even bigger and better if we have a decent
growing season.
Let's keep them growing for a few more weeks.
