Hello. The tap root is the only root I've seen that can go 2-3 feet deep.
The other root's that come off of the vine's will normaly go 4-6 inchs deep.
But if you want to till the whole patch 2 feet deep,go ahead, It can't hurt.
Your patch should be around 800 to 1000 square feet per plant.
