Re: Tilling Soil
Is my AOL account sending out blank emails?! Dang, that is weird.
I hope I don't have HAPPY99.EXE or some weird thing.
Anyway, much organic matter worked in over a foot in the soil is usually a
waste.
In nature, plants only expect to get nutrients out of the top 6-8 inches of
soil, since that is where the topsoil and compost is always, naturally. The
deeper roots are more equipped for just water. Also, anything not fully
composted will probably cease to break down when it is too deep, since the
oxygen, warmth, and microorganisms are not as numerous too deep in the
ground. So basically, it might be best to use the same amount of compost, but
concentrate it in the top foot of soil, where the plants can use it best.
Also, the easy, and natural, way to mix it in and incorporate it into the
soil is not to do it at all, but let EARTHWORMS do it. Go to a bait shop or
whatever and just by a bunch of worms. They will mix it in better than any
human could do. So just layer all of it on top, throw in a bunch of worms,
and the work is done.
