Yes hummingbirds do eat small insects they make up a large part of their 
diet.  I never thought about placing them in the garden, that is a good 
idea.

A friend of mine has humming bird feeders near his patch and says he
doesn't have insect problems. Do humming birds eat insects to.Maybe purple
marten houses are in order.
