This is directly from a news release post card we've sent to many of the 
growers and media throughout the US & Canada.  I've also asked Duncan to post 
the Rules & Entry Requirements for the event. They are also listed below so 
he will just be adding this information to the above release.  It is 
information you may choose to know.  If you have a friend without internet 
access please pass the info along.  All are welcome to the event and if you 
have any questions I will try to answer.  However, my time is very limited

WORLD PUMPKIN WEIGH-OFF  OCTOBER 2, 1999
AT THE GREAT PUMPKIN FARM 11199 MAIN ST (RT 5), CLARENCE NY, 14031
         

                       RULES AND REGULATIONS

     1.  An exhibitor must be a World Pumpkin Confederation Club Member
     as of the date of the contest. Membership is accepted the day of the 
contest.

     2.   The  competition is open to all persons in any  part  of  the
     world.

     3.   An  exhibitor (husband and wife as one) may  enter  only  one
     specimen per class.   The family of an exhibitor may enter no more
     than  two  specimens per class including the specimen of  the exhibitor.

     4.   An  exhibitor must be present for the competition.

     5.   A WPC exhibitor or the exhibitor's specimen(s) may NOT enter
     any  other  site competition prior to or on the day of  the  World
     Pumpkin Confederation event.

     6.   The country of residence of an exhibitor is the country which
     will be credited with the results of a competition.

     7.   A specimen must be grown by the exhibitor in the  country  of
     residence of the exhibitor.

     8.   A specimen must be entered and weighed at the  "Autho-
     rized Weigh-Off Location", The Great Pumpkin Farm in Clarence, NY .

     9.   Entries must be received on an official entry form by 10:00 a.m. 
(entries must be
present at the start of the competition).

     10.  A competition is to be divided into four (4) classes.
          a. GIANT PUMPKIN - a fruit cream-yellow to orange in color.

          b.  GIANT  SQUASH  - any fruit green to grey  or  mottled  in
     color.

          c.  GIANT  WATERMELON - any fruit of  the  citrullus  lanatus
     group.

          d.   OTHER - any fruit, vegetable,  or flower of  competitive
     merit will be properly weighed and/or measured.

     11.    A  specimen  must  be  healthy  and  completely  undamaged.
     Specimens  must be presented to the judges ready  for  competition
     and  weighing.   EACH  SPECIMEN MUST HAVE A  CARRYING  DEVICE  FOR
     PROPER LIFTING (TARP).  Vine must be trimmed to one inch (2.5  cm)
     from the stem (stalk) of the fruit.   Foreign material may not  be
     included in the weighing.   To enforce this,  the judges may x-ray
     the specimen.  No carrying device may be included in the weighing of the 
top 5
    specimens. 
     (THIS  INCLUDES  TARPS OR ANY OTHER CARRYING DEVICE BEING  PRE 
    OR  POST WEIGHED AS A TARE) Growers may submit their tarps as an
    option, after the competition for a tare weight calculation of specimens 
below 5th
    place.

     12.   Specimens  of  equal weight  will  be  declared  co-winners. 
     Weights  will be recorded in no less than half (1/2) pound  increments,  
(round
     down to lowest half pound, if metric, round down to lowest quarter
     (1/4) Kg).  Measurements from electronic scales with capability to
     measure in tenths (.1 pound or .1 Kilogram) is suggested and will be 
implemented if 
    available.

     13.  No entrant or spectator shall attempt to influence the judges
     or impede the proceedings of fair competition.

     14.   The World Pumpkin Confederation Site Coordinator is the  of-
     ficial representative of the World Pumpkin Confederation   respon-
     sible  for  abiding by and absolutely enforcing the rules  of  the
     World Pumpkin Confederation.

     15.  The World Pumpkin Confederation reserves the right to suspend
     or revoke membership rights of any member or sponsorship rights of
     any  sponsor  not in compliance with World  Pumpkin  Confederation
     Rules or general rules of sportsmanship and fair competition.


     ENTRIES MUST BE AT A CONTEST SITE BY 10:00 A.M. OCT 2, 1999


     PRIZES:

     1.  $10,000.00 USD to the largest pumpkin entered at the WPC Compe-
        tition at the CLARENCE, NY Site on October 2nd.  Specimen becomes the 
sole  
    property of the WPC.   Award to be paid within 14 days of the contest.

    2.  $5,000.00 USD to the grower of the 2nd place pumpkin entered at 
Clarence, NY
    Site on October 2nd. Specimen becomes the sole property of the WPC. Award 
to
    be paid within 14 days of the contest.


3.  $3,000.00 USD to the grower of the 3rd place pumpkin entered at Clarence, 
NY
    Site on October 2nd. Specimen becomes the sole property of the WPC.  
Award to
    be paid within 14 days of the contest.


4.  $1,000.00 USD to the grower of the 4th place pumpkin entered at Clarence, 
NY
    Site on October 2nd. Specimen becomes the sole property of the WPC. Award 
to
    be paid within 14 days of the contest.


5.  $1,000.00 USD to the grower of the 5th place pumpkin entered at Clarence, 
NY
    Site on October 2nd. Specimen becomes the sole property of the WPC. Award 
to
    be paid within 14 days of the contest.

    
6.  $100.00 USD for each winner (1st place)of the
    A. Heaviest WATERMELON
    B. Tallest CORN Stalk
    C. Tallest SUNFLOWER
    D. Longest GOURD
 
    Pumpkin(s)  winning the above cash awards (items #'s 1,  2, 3, 4 and  5)
        will become the sole property of the WPC.  Winner(s) agrees that the  
use  of his
    (her) name(s) and likeness may be used by the WPC (and  sponsors) for
    promotional purposes without further compensation.  Entrants  must comply 
with
    the general WPC Rules and Entry  requirements.
