cutting the stems??

Please advise.  When cutting my pumpkins off the vine; I leave 3 or 4 inches 
of stem.  But in a weeks time the stem starts to rot and I end up with barely 
nothing left.  Am I doing this wrong??  Should I be cutting the actual vine  
its on and not the stem?  After cutting I've been leaving them on a nice 
sunny deck.
