Changing of the guard

In only 3 more days (if it hasn't already happened) a new page of history
will replace a very important event.

In 1991 the 567.5 Mombert entered the record books. Since that date the
seeds of that one pumpkin have made many dramatic impacts on AG growing,
many of which are still being felt today. Few other pumpkins have made such
a profound impact on this hobby/sport/obsession.

Now the sad note. By the end of the day October 2, 1999 the 567.5, which
currently holds the 978th place, will no longer have a place on Duncan's
list of the top 1000 pumpkins. This, at least to me, seems truly sad. The
only comfort is that the 567.5 played a very important part in its own
removal. Had Kirk Mombert not been so generous with the seeds from the 567.5
then it seems likely the 567.5 would have had many more years on the top
1000 list.

In light of the above, I would like to recommend that Duncan start a page
that lists "Hall of Fame" pumpkins, of which I would nominate Kirk Mombert
and the Mombert 567.5 as the first entry in that new area.

Certainly there are other pumpkins that deserve such an honor, but for the
next few days I would campaign for a moratorium on any other nominations.

Mike Stephenson
