Dear Lin, Hydrangeas can be pruned now as they are breaking dormancy. If
the stem has a dried flower head on it, you can prune it as short as you
like. If the stem has only a pair of new leaves at the tip, this is a stem
that will flower this year. If you prune it, you will remove this year's
flower. If your Hydrangea is old and rangy, prune it hard. You will lose a
year's flowers, but it will renew and invigorate your shrub. The easiest
way to propagate Hydrangea is by stem cuttings. The perfect time is the
month of August. Keep them in a GH or cold frame over the winter and they
will be off and running the following spring.
