The seed needs to be scarified before stratification, but the requirements
vary a lot from variety to variety and species to species. A good general
method I learned is to just mash the berries in with some sand and stratify
that in the refrigerator all winter. The fruit pulp fermentation breaks
down the seed coat enough that it will germinate fairly well. If you have
cleaned seed, mix it with a little apple pulp and let it ferment.
If you need more, contact me offlist and I'll put you in contact with a
private breeder of black raspberries who has done extensive testing of
methods.
