Gail mentioned growing Hydrangea quercifolia seeds. A couple of years ago
I decided I had perhaps hybridized enough rhododendrons and decided to try
hydrangeas. Well - I used my reading glasses plus a x15 pocket enlarger,
and even so,it was not something I was successful at. No wonder most of us
amateurs choose giant flowers with enormous stamens. I would be interested
in growing open pollinated hydrangea seeds, though. Even the ball-headed
hortensias seemed to have some fertile flowers mixed in with the sterile
ones. Do they set seeds in all climates, when should I look for them, and
what do they look like? I usually leave the flower heads on all winter,
but I have never noticed seeds, even on lace-caps or species Hydrangeas.
