I've grown A.b. 'Elegans' on a post supporting our covered walkway for
about 7 years. This is an almost totally shaded location - no overhead sun
because of the walkway roof. Does receive light from the side, primarily
west light, but no direct summer sun because of large trees.
Vine seems quite happy and sets berries each year. Soil is amended clay,
basically on the acid side.
I, too, have not had success trying cuttings - they all simply rot.
However, the vine has done some mild self-seeding, so I imagine that seed
may be the best bet. All the selfs are variegated and seem to be identical
to the mother plant. I have not purposely collected and started seed, so
have no idea of the requirements.
Hope this helps,
