Re: Gib vs Auxin #2

Hello everyone,

Here is a follow up to our recent discussion about using Gibberellins as
rooting hormones (mainly between myself and Rob). I have done some further
reading on the subject and the litterature is quite unequivocal about it:
Gibberelling INHIBITS adventitious rooting, except for a few rare
exceptions.

I have some references for people interested in the fundamentals of the
matter. Warning... they are highly technical!

1)	Hansen, J. 1988. Influence of Gibberellins on adventitious root
formation. Chapter 12 (pp. 185-202) in: Adventitious root formation in
cuttings, edited by T.D. Davis, B.E. Haissig and N. Sankhla. Advances in
Plant Sciences Series, vol. 2. Dioscorides Press. ISBN 0-921146-10-0

(this chapter - well the whole book in fact! - will interest anyone who is
looking for serious insights into the physiological mechanisms of cutting
root formation)

...By the way Rob, the chapter in question lists Salix fragilis, Salux
purpurea, and Salix viminalis as three willow species for which the rooting
of cuttings in inhibited by applied gibberellin. Sorry to confirm my doubts.

2)	Batten, D.J. and P.B. Goodwin. 1978. Phytohormones and the induction of
adventitious roots. pp. 137-173 in: Phytohormones and related compounds -
a comprehensive treatise, vol. II. Edited by D.S. Letham, P.B. Goodwin and
T.J.V. Higgins. Elsevier/North-Holland Biomedical Press, Amsterdam. ISBN
0-444-80054-9.

(I myself haven't read it, but it has been quoted as a review of the
effects of applied gibberellin as a rooting inhibitor for cuttings).

Both these volumes will probably require a trip to a college library, or at
least an inter-library loan from your municipal library. But if you're into
plant physiology and cuttings, I highly recommend the first book by Davis
and collaborators. I personally keep it handy for my research.

Now let's get back to gardening! Have a great weekend, everyone.

Denise
