L.H.Bailey lists P.japonicus, fragrans, palmatus and officinalis. which
have you? Says:
they all flower in winter or early spring before leafing out.
some spread agressively by underground runners
some have huge leaves
they all need damp soil, or grow in swamps.
I have Bailey's Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture, 1943, Macmillan, in 3
vols. the same edition also appears in 4 volumes; this edition was
originally issued bound in six volumes. Your public library should have a
copyof one of these editions. Do not fiddle with the later revised editions
in one volume which may be offered to you: they lack the information of the
earler ones.. Bailey first published in 1901, and set out to provide a
compendium of all the catalogs of all the nurseryman dealers in the USA. He
includes origins, taxonomy, cultural needs, and much much more. It is a
botanical horticulturist's bible with the pentateuch included!
