Some thoughts on your Cerinthe puzzle. The original species Cerinthe major
has yellow flowers, each of them with a maroon base.The blue flowered
Cerinthe is a variety of this (var. purpurescens).It usually comes true
from seed, but maybe you got a seed that had mutated back to the original.
Just guessing.
