RE: Mystery seedlings?

Hi Barb---I too (on occasion) have found questionable things germinating in
some of the flats I had planted. These usually had characteristics similar
to the ones you described in your recent posting. What I finally realized,
was that those unwanted seedlings were from seeds that were already present
in the soiless medium I was using. Even though the packages stated things
like "pure" or "sterile" on the outside---I found that many times they were
not as advertised. Usually I encountered this situation when I used
products that were "cheaper" than most of the national brands. When this
happened--I let the seedlings grow on for a bit -- at least until the true
leaves began to appear. When I was able to recognize which were the actual
plants I had sowed--I snipped the unwanted seedlings at the soil level. My
suggestion is to spend a little bit more for a sowing medium at the time of
purchase in order to be assured that what you see are the seedlings of what
you actually planted.
