Papaya seeds

Papaya seeds have a gelatinous membrane around them (looks just like the
membrane around Passiflora seeds). Is it better to soak the seeds and remove
the membrane before planting, or does it matter? I would guess the membrane is
either designed to keep the seeds from drying out, or to protect the seed when
passing through an animal's digestive tract.

For storage, should the membrane be removed first, and then the seeds dried, or
left on?

Any information would be appreciated.
