Re: Scrophularia auriculata 'Varigata'

Hi Diane,
Scrophularia aquatica 'Variegata', the Variegated Water FIgwort,  can be
rooted from cuttings now, though April/May is much better, as the young
plants can build up greater starch reserves for overwintering.  Those stuck
now will often suffer 50-75 percent loss over winter (personal experience).

Best to do basal cuttings, removing the shoots that appear at the base of
the clump in early spring.  These will often be shoots that have
overwintered.  They will root easily under a poly tent in any moist media. 
I use a weak root promoting compound but that is not really always
necessary.  I routinely use bottom heat at that time of year in an outdoor
frame.  This also helps to mediate the frost potential that I still have
throughout April.

For those who do not know this plant it is a wonderful bog plant for sun or
shade.  It will grow in drier soils but will not be as large or luxuriant. 
It is also a clumper and does not spread via rhizomes or seed.  Mine has
flowers reaching about 6.5 feet right now in a bog that receives 1/2 day
sun.
