Hi Colette,
Gardeners meet all over cyberspace, don't they!!!!
a) Move to Madeira and plant in good loamy garden in shade.
b) Brand new Hortus 111 says for all magnolias:-
Propagated by seeds sown in Autumn or stratified; also by green
cuttings under glass, by layers put down in spring and transplanted
to pots the following summer, and named cultivars by grafting,
particularly on M. acuminata.
WATSONII A hybrid, presumably M.hypoleuca x M.Sieboldii. Tree, to
25 ft. Lvs. obovate, to 7 in. long, glaucous and pubescent beneath:
fls. appearing with lvs. to 6 in. across, fragrant, petals white, sepals
pink; fr. crimson, about 2 in. long. In e. US not hardy north of zone
6.
Funny, doesn't say anything about nicking them.
Am on the move, so all my books except Hortus 111 are packed.
Hmmm.... Wonder if it's the saame Watson(Hook) who has named the
wonderful little Watsonia lily from so. Africa.
Cheers Ginny
