Mark,
its helpful to hear from points abroad and what the reaction ,first hand ,to
the introduction of these seeds have been..
I found your post an odd mix of encouragement and discouragement, but thats the
nature of this subject matter.
Your expressed concerns and questions are the same ones that haunt me..Until
they/time provide the answers who can say what the facts are..
Your take on the objective to make these seeds available to 2nd/3rd world
countries asap concerns me as well. Its all been done before with displacing
their locally adapted seed strains with corporate F1s and according to reports
that was a disaster as the seed is co-dependent upon insecticides and
pesticides ,all needs programmed into the seed from the on set..So now you have
a triple dependency crop in countries that are seeking to escape poverty and
while they can raise crops more plentifully they are continually at the
financial mercy of their crops needs.Of course the same is true here in the US
for our farmers.I have spoken to various farmers and they express a desire to
bail out of this catch 22 but so long as competeting growers utilize these
technologies, etc they cannot and remain viable..Soon the mega/corporate farm
will displace the smaller farms, since many are owned/conglomerates held by
seeds, chemical companies etc they will monopolize the whole ball of wax.Or at
least that the way it seems to be shaping up at present .
Currently it narrows down the issue to; if farmers would refuse to buy, then
the problem would die for lack of sales..Hope that is more than wishful
thinking.
Keep us posted on developements in your part of the world.
