Re: Legumes, Acacias


I often have planted soft, not yet hardened legume seed with great results.
I think it is a great idea to plant them like this as long as they are
definitely ripe (not too green although some green is OK).

Regarding the hardened seed, you would be surprised what germinates without
treatment. However a quick sulfuric acid wash (just a few minutes) usually
doesn't hurt anything if you neutralize the acid as soon as those couple of
minutes are through. Acid softens the whole coat which is why I myself
prefer it over nicking seeds (I have had seeds that were nicked germinate
but not make it out of the seed coat). A good overnight or more soaking is
good too.
