Re: Alstromeria was: UNSUBSCIBE PROPAGATION

From info. saved circa 10/97 from the old seeds list from post by Loren
Russell:

"Start seed warm [indoors] for 4-5 weeks, around 20-25 degrees
C [or 70-75 F], transfer to a cool place [aka my basement], around 45-50
F. Germination takes place within two weeks at the cooler temperature.

This was advised for species Alstromeria, some of which occur at high
elevations in southern South America. "

He went on to say that hybrids might be easier but you're looking at 6-8
weeks at least...

I have grown them from seed a couple of times. First was T&M and followed
their very elaborate instructions in their old seed handbook - cannot
remember exact times, but started warm, put in fridge, took out for more
warm, put back in fridge and then they germinated when I took them out
again. Second time, think I started them in late summer and left pots
outside when they germinated the following spring. So, seems they do need
to start in warmth and get a cooling period. Also believe I soaked the
seed. Took some time to germinate as I recall....been a few years since I
did this. Roots are extremely brittle and they resent having them handled
much - fat, crisp and white, sort of radiate out from crown. So,
transplant seedlings with great care.

My first lot grew for several years in amended clay border in mostly shade,
some afternoon sun and then, with no warning, disappeared. Second lot did
not make it out of the seedling pots - my neglect, I am sure. I believe
they want good drainage and probably more sun than I offered as they tended
to lean toward it. Border they were in tended to be on the dry side in
summer.
