Re: Re-Starting a Begonia from Broken Stem

Dear JFR

(1) Yes you should be able to root the begonia leaf from a leaf cutting.

(2) I assume from your posting that the poor little plant had only one leaf
... you are concerned also about the regeneration of new leaf from the
roots? If you have viable roots, which you likely have, then new leaf should
regenerate from the soil soon. Just keep watering as usually. Keep the
temperature of the pot warm since the plant will think that it is spring not
winter dormany season!

To root the cutting use a sterile media. If you have clean potting soil put
some in a shallow tray, put into the oven until 180+F is maintained for at
least an hour. The cool down and use later. This will help prevent fungus
for forming and insect eggs will be killed too. Or, use a non soil media
such as vermiculite, rockwool, perlite.

Cut through the large leaf and cut through the main veins in a number of
places on the underside. Lay the leaf on the surface of the media, top side
facing upward. Weigh the leaf down if necessary with stones (or something).
Water throughly. Cover completely with plastic or put whole pot in a clear
plastic bag (to maintain a humid micro climate). Keep in a bright place
since the plant needs light for photosynthesis and for production of root.
The temperature should be maintained at 65-80F (not too hot). The new roots
will generate within 7-14 days. After root formation wait a few days, open
the bag slightly then a few days later remove plastic.

Large scale growers use rooting hormone (such as Rhizopon AA Water Soluble
Tablet solution, using total immerse a few seconds, used in every low total
concentration, or dry powder rooting hormone such as Rhizopon AA #1 - a low
conc powder). U can have your local hort supplier purchase from master
distributor V-J Growers Supplu 800-327-5422).
In your case try without rooting hormones ... it should root.
