I pulled this information from my web page. Some of my favorite inexpensive
seed sources:
Abundant Life Seed Foundation</b>; PO Box 772; Port Townsend, WA 98368,
catalog $2.00. A not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving
heirloom plants. In addition to a large selection of heirloom vegetables,
they offer seeds of perennial herbs, and wildflowers. The seed packets are
reasonably priced, and very generous. Quality is good and service is fast.
Bluestem Prairie Nursery; Rt. 2, Box 106-A; Hillsboro, IL 62049, free
catalog. Specializes in prairie plants of the Midwest. All seed packets are
$1.50 each and incredibly generous. Plants are listed by common name, but
the botanical is included. Little in the way of descriptions, but
germination instructions are included with your order. Most of the seed is
collected from the owner's own prairie. Very fast service, fair quality. Do
be careful what you order here. Although many prairie plants make delightful
additions to the garden, some are weedy and can take over. If you don't know
what it is in this catalog it's best to do some research before you order.
Fragrant Path, The P.O Box 328; Ft Calhoun, NE 68023, catalog $1.00. A fun
read with loads of different and unusual plants. Prices per packet are only
$1.-$1.50, and are quite generous. Specializes in fragrant garden plants.
The only problem I have with this catalog is the way is organized by common
name, and divided into obscure categories, instead of being alphabetized.
The service is good, and quality is usually very good, although I've gotten
an occasional dud.
More catalog information is available on the web:
http://www.cog.brown.edu/gardening Cindy Johnson's Catalog of Catalogs
is a good place to look for commercial seed vendors. She lists nearly 2000
mail order catalogs, both for plants and seeds, along with relevant
information about the catalog, including valuable comments from other
gardeners. The database is searchable.
or
http://www.gardenscape.com/GSCompaniesWWW.html Gardenscape's Guide to
Nurseries, Seed and Landscape Companies Online. lists only companies
available on line. These companies do their own entries to this page.
"Gardening By Mail (A source book)" By Barbara J. Barton, published by
Houghton Mifflin Books. Ms. Barton's book is a huge source of mail order
businesses having to do with anythingin the horticultural marketplace. You
can find references for seeds, plants, bulbs, garden products, magazines,
and addresses for garden clubs, societies and organizations. The
information is indexed by product type and geographical location. Each
entry gives a short description of the products available by the company,
the catalog price, and more. When I
bought my copy, it retailed for $18.95. A portion of it is also available
at http://www.vg.com/gbm.
Hope I got all the tags removed.
Other sources are listed on my web page under articles on seed sources. Also
check the link to alpine and rock garden information for seed companies that
specialize in those plants.
I have seeds available to trade or sell on my webpage as well.
Grow well,
Amber
