Seeds that need fire


Actually, it's not so much that the seeds need to be heated, as the 
cone or other structure containing the seeds requires heat before it 
will open and release the seeds.  Pinus contorta (lodgepole pine) is 
a classic North American example of this condition, known as 
serotiny.  Those big 1988 wildfires in Yellowstone National Park, 
which burned about one million acres, resulted in a lot of 
pine cones being heated, which then opened and released the seed, 
some it stored on the tree for decades.
