Re: Ilex/Holly propagation

I currently have a few Ilex (Blue Prince and Blue Princess)cuttings
going. All are showing new top growth but as of today no roots have
formed. I took the cuttings about 2 weeks ago. These cutting were taken
from "live" plants, I don't know how well they would do from older
branches that have been off the plant for a while. I would remove them
from the water and place them into soil now.

I prepared the cuttings by removing enough bottom leaves so as to have 2
sets of nodes below the soil, leaving 4 leaves on top. I treated half of
the cuttings with rooting hormone, 0.4% IBA and the other half with 0.8%
IBA. Placed 3 to a small pot in a peat based mixture and then into a
large Zip-Lock type of plastic baggie. They are currently 3" under 4
flourescent tubes. A couple of the females had flowers form which I
removed, to hopefully re-direct the energy into root formation. I'm
tempted to remove some of the new top growth as well.

If using baggies to retain moisture check frequently for mould and other
nasties and remove any leaves that have fallen.

Good luck.
