It can take quite a while. Last year I started sweet potatoes in sand in
early February. The shoots grew slowly, and i don't know whether it was
because of low light I didn't use supplemental lighting, they were
dependent only on sunlight, being in a greenhouse with a minimum temp of 55
at night. When I set them outdoors in late May (after danger of frost is
past), some of the vines were as long as 14 inches. Once in the warmed
soil outdoors (warmed by black plastic placed over the planting area a
couple of weeks ahead of time), they began to grow rapidly. The vines are
quite pretty. Some people grow them for a houseplant. Frankly, I wouldn't
have wanted the vines to be longer than they were. Margaret L
