Hi Joel,
The only reason (apart from fanaticism) why anyone might want to propagate
conifers is to obtain cultivars with specific characteristics - dwarf
cultivars and hybrids. An example is Ginkgo, where there is only the 1
species but a number of interesting cultivars.
Most conifers even object to any disturbance of the roots.
Cuttings from all Pinacaea will take better if they are from young trees
which still have their juvinile foliage, but this tends to render the whole
exercise pointless as you cannot tell what the adult will look like at this
point !
Softwood cuttings in the early summer, from the fastest growing part (near
the top) a very free draining medium, mist, plenty of light (minimise the
number of buds), hormones.
You will most likely find that low growing lateral shoots will continue to
grow laterally - I am growing a Pinus pinaster bonsai that grows down over
the side of its pot from an adventitious shoot.
Good luck.
Best wishes,
Matthew Sleigh
