Stephen,
I am forwarding your query to the Propagation mailing
list. Hopefully, you will receive some support on this
issue.

I have an interest in wild grapes. Here in California,
we have a wild grape Vitis Californica. Some of the
particular wild vines I know of grow near a creek.
They seem to do well there and grown high into the
trees. There is one vine, that could be 50 to 100
years old, looking at the trunks, and it grows 50 to
60 feet into an oak tree. This particular vine is
located a mile from the creek, however.

The other thing you should know is that I am not sure
these vines are 100% wild grapes, Vitis Californica or
otherwise. There is a lot of Vitis Vinifera in the
area, and these could be the result genes mixing and
going wild. The grapes that form on these vines do not
form full clusters (like in the store) as there are a
lot of stems, or spaces where grapes did not form.
Nevertheless, one can find enough grapes to collect
seeds like I did last November. I am concerned that
the sparse clusters reflects a sterility issue, but if
these vines are 100% Vitis, and not part of the 2n=40
group, I should be okay.

Now I finally get to my questions. I tried germinating
a small number of these seeds (keeping the bulk of
them until I get the technique right), and had no
luck. Perhaps my methods are not any good, or the
seeds are indeed sterile. I tried it once in the house
under a light(from reading your web site I probably
needed cold treatment first), then I tried soaking a
few seeds in water, then I put everything outdoors
under a clear plastic cover to protect them from the
cool nights. Well there is nothing yet, and it has
been weeks. I have now gone to the next step, and put
some seeds into the refrigerater, and I will keep
them there for 30 days until I attempt sprouting a
few again (I probably should have done this first, oh
well).

My questions are simple. Do you know of any good ways
to germinate these wild grape seeds? Can you point to
any reference materials, or people that might be able
to help? Maybe my new approach is what you would
advise?

Thank you for your consideration.
