Re: Wild CA Grape Seeds

Have not, intentionally, tried to germinate wild grape, one of the
rampant weeds of my woods - the birds do a more than adequate job for
me:)

However, according to 'Seeds of Woody Plants in north America' by
James A. and Cheryl G. Young, the seeds exhibit dormancy due to
absicissic acid concentrations in the embryo. They are referring to
Vitis labrusca L. - the Fox grape, native to the Eastern and
Midwestern parts of the US, but what they say for this species may
hold true for the native California grape.

They further say that seed can be stored for a couple of years at low
temperatures and requires prechilling - for this species from 120 to
220 days. Then they say this - I will quote the paragraph entirely:

" Germination: Many investigations have shown that gibberellin
enrichment enhances the germination of grape seeds. Pal et al.
(1976) suggested that gibberellin enrichment improved germination and
subsequent seedling growth of some grape cultivars. Patil and Patil
(1984) reported on detailed studies of the seed morphology of
numerous grape species. Ellis et al. (1983) developed the following
procedure for germination of grape seeds: (a) soak for 24 hours in
0.5M H2O2 (b) soak an additional 24 hours in 1000 ppm GA3 , and (c)
prechill for 21 days at 3 to 5C. The optimum temperature regime for
testing germination was 20/30C, and 25C was the best constant
temperature."

Hope this helps.
