Sprinkling California Poppies in the snow

I have heard tell of this practice for years but have never done it.  Is
this the right moment? (I am in the northwest Chicago suburbs, zone 5
but barely).

I have about 10 packets of California poppies and an asparagus bed
waiting--plus a terrible case of spring fever
