Judy and anyone else interested in Plant-ex.:
I copied the letter off the screen so that is the way it came to me from
Plant-ex.I don't know what response you'll get.
However another member of Seedlist subscribed yesterday but got a reply
saying that it was a UK group and members were advised not to exchange
plants OR seeds outside the UK because of restrictions.I wrote the following
letter and got the ensuing reply both of which I have reprinted here for the
benefit of other members who wanted the address.Sorry for the length...I am
unable to tell whether my letter was posted ..I think not.Presumably if you
join you will be able to post...there has been at least one posting recently
from outside the UK.

Letter to Plant-ex 2nd Feb..subject "Is this group exclusive?"
As a UK national living in the Republic of Ireland I was happy last month to
find a seed-exchange based in the UK as I have done most of my trading since
going on-line with fellow-gardeners in America.
I passed on joining-information to some American friends and was dismayed
this morning to get a letter from one of them saying that upon joining she
had had a letter of welcome which also told her that there was no point in
her * being* a member as she would not be able to trade with UK, such trade
in seed and plant material being illegal.
This is not the case.It is quite straightforward to send flower seed to USA
and Canada and to receive it.[It is even possible to send it to New Zealand
and Australia who have much tighter restrictions.] All that is required is
that a customs docket be filled in at the post office and attached to the
envelope.
As a new member I would be interested in the feelings of others in the
group.I would be surprised to find a general concensus of opinion that the
group should be limited to members in the UK.The exchanges in America have
made me and other British traders most welcome and I hope that you would
agree that gardeners are not bounded by man-made frontiers and that trades
with America and the rest of the world open up great possibilities for new
plants for our gardens.
I await your comments.

The purpose of the list is to encourage exchange of seeds or plant
materials between UK gardeners. Due to extensive restrictions on
movement of plant materials in or out of the UK it is not advisable to
consider exchanging any seeds or plant materials with those outside of
the UK.
Please address any questions relating to the operation of this mailing
